The small intestines receive food from the stomach and then pass the food onto the large intestines. It is in the intestines that most of the food is digested by enzymes, biological catalysts that break the food up into very small particles, so that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Once absorbed into the bloodstream it can be used by the body for what ever is required. In the latter stages of the large intestine any excess water in the faeces is reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
